Why You Should Detoxify Before Winter

Samhain is all about release of the past – this goes for our bodies as well.

This is a good time of year to cleanse the body and remove all the waste and debris that has built up in our system. As winter approaches, our bodies will naturally begin to slow down. We are less active so we burn off fewer calories. We sweat less, so we don’t rid our body of as many toxins. We also tend to eat more comfort food at this time of year which has a tendency to just sit in our stomachs like a rock.

When our bodies are full of junk and not functioning well, that is the time when bacteria and disease attack. Often, the reason we “catch cold” is not because someone gave it to us – it is because we invited it ourselves.

So before winter arrives we should clean out our bodies so that they can function better and allow our immune systems to do its job.

Consider fasting for a couple of days before Halloween. Yes, it will be hard to resist those delicious chocolate goodies that you ‘conveniently’ purchased too soon, but remember – those are for the little goblins. Ultimately the fasting will do your body good.

Also prudent at this time of year is to consume foods and herbs that will help rid your body of toxins. “Burdock” helps to clean the liver and kidneys. It also helps to shed off dead skin cells, perfect for Samhain. Add about a teaspoon to a tea ball and place in a cup. Pour in boiling water and allow to seep for 10-15 minutes.

Dandelion leaves are also really good for detoxifying the body. They are free and can be found just about everywhere. Just make sure you are not picking ones that might have been sprayed with pesticide or fertilizer. As a bonus, dandelion leaves may also help lower cholesterol. Put them in soups or just add them to your salad.

Of course, there are also products that can be purchased over the counter at the drug store to help rid your body of toxins. Some of them are a little extreme, like taking laxatives, which we don’t recommend but many people swear by them.

Ultimately, the goal is to rid your body of as much waste, debris and toxins as possible before the cold winter months set in. This will help you body cope better and perhaps avoid catching any of those nasties.
